From 'vampire chic' to Japanese craft: Soorty frames AW27-28
Denim mill Soorty has unveiled its autumn-winter 2027-28 collection, presenting three narratives, drawing inspiration from American university nostalgia, Japanese craftsmanship and gothic nightlife culture.
‘Campus’ is rooted in 1980s and 1990s US university life, and explores a layered vintage-inspired aesthetic. The range focuses on heritage denim with cleaner, less aggressive surfaces than previous seasons. Specially developed shades are intended to wash down authentically over time, while hemp, recycled fibres, cotton and Tencel blends combined with nep constructions create tactile, “imperfectly perfect” textures. The collection also revisits several of Soorty’s best-selling qualities, updating them with new fibre compositions and refined finishes.
‘Kinetic’ takes its cues from Japanese culture and the artisanal precision of Japanese denim manufacturing. According to Soorty, the collection was heavily influenced by the way Japanese designers reinterpret familiar garments through meticulous detailing and subtle innovation. It focuses on “the beauty of the build”, emphasising intentional stitching, construction details and fabric engineering. Rich, multi-dipped indigos span heavyweight rigid denims with sculptural structure through to softer fabrics designed for comfort and wearability, including chenille, corduroy and velour textures.
With ‘Rebellion Noir’, Soorty shifts into a darker territory inspired by late 20th-century underground culture, after-dark city glamour and contemporary “vampire” aesthetics. The collection merges gothic rebellion and grunge attitude sophistication through a moody palette built around deep blacks, dusty indigos, burgundy tones, smoke blues and leather-like finishes. A focus is placed on black denim developments, including black casts that chip away like indigo, as well as blue-blacks and grey casts. Coating techniques play a key role, with matte, transparent, soft-touch and leather-inspired finishes, and specialised overdyes contributing to the collection’s tactile, high-contrast identity.
