Timeline of advances: installation marks 50th anniversary of stonewashing

The denim industry is marking a remarkable milestone: the 50th anniversary of stonewashing - one of the most transformative innovations in the history of denim.

This milestone was marked through an installation, 'Celebrating 50 Years of Stone Washing’, at the recent Kingpins Amsterdam, led by Denim Theater’s  Zennure Danisman and Endrime’s Mohsin Sajid and Sadia Rafique.

“From the rebellious denim of the 1970s and the iconic fades of the 1980s to the expressive washes of the 1990s and the highly engineered finishes of today, stonewashing has continuously reinvented itself. It remains not only a process but also a creative tool, an invisible craft that transforms fabric into identity,” said the partners.

Original garments featured in the installation were loaned from the archives of HMS, Officina39, Endrime, Denim Theater and Tonello, offering rare glimpses into the evolution of washed denim across decades.

Ms Danisman told us: “At the beginning of my career, recipes asked for five hours of stonewashing, which seems crazy now. We have shown the evolution from the 1970s to today, including interpretations  of the acid wash and the iconic Kurt Cobain jean, using laser and ozone combinations.”

Artistic Milliners’ fabrics were used for a series of new garments created specifically for the project. Each piece was sewn by Endrime and washed through different approaches by Denim Theater, Tonello, Officina+39 and HMS. Using the same fabric as a starting point, each collaborator interpreted stonewashing through their own vision, techniques and technologies.

Alongside the installation, a book covering the History of Washing, written by Zennure Danisman and published by Endrime, is in the making – more on this story soon.
